Why not the SNMBA? Red Rock Riders is the result of the lack of action and transparency from the Southern Nevada Mountain Biking Association in and around Las Vegas, Nevada. With the total lack of transparency, along with a complete lack of effectiveness, one has to wonder and strongly suspect if the SNMBA is nothing more than an extension of the BLM, ultimately limiting and reducing mountain biking rights in the area? In this case, by starting a 501 (c)(3) not for profit. Any efforts towards discovery in any regards have not received any response from their leadership.
The issues are:
- No financial transparency whatsoever.
- They make nothing available as to funds, use of funds, the compensation of leadership, or anything else. This is extremely suspicious, and when asked the Treasurer and Vice President Alison Cormier simply refused to answer any questions.
- How donations are used is not disclosed (see #3).
- No organizational transparency.
- They list five people on their website. The organizational structure beyond that is a mystery. It is also a mystery how and why their leadership is chosen.
- Few to no projects actually completed.
- In the past five years the SNMBA can not demonstrate a single completed project in Clark County or Henderson.
- They have no projects underway.
- They have not managed to accomplish a single thing, either in terms of a real life project (like new trails, signage, etc.) or advocacy such as expanding mountain bike access up to and including e-bike access for mountain bikers in the Southern Nevada Region.
- Lack of focus on Las Vegas.
- Let’s face it, Las Vegas is Southern Nevada. 99% of the population lives within Las Vegas and Henderson. The SNMBA has chosen and continues to chose not to engage Las Vegas except by hosting a booth at several events throughout the year, along with an event at Blue Diamond, which is minimal to say the least, and is purely for fundraising, nothing else. They instead choose to focus historically on Nye County, where Mr. Spicer (the extremely wealthy founder of the SNMBA) resides on his gigantic inherited ranch.
- Lack of any sort of plan for growth. Lack of any sort of plan for anything.
- Typically a non-profit organization will have clear mission statements, clear plans for using donated funds for growth, and so on. The Southern Nevada Mountain Biking Association does none of this.
In short, they constantly ask for money, yet do nothing with it apparently.
